THE CURVY SCOOP | Curve The Runway Plus Size Catwalk

Well well well, that was fun! Earlier this month we were invited to show our collection at the first ever Curve the Runway fashion event in Brisbane. The plus size fashion show featured 21 models walking the runway for curve-loving Australian brands.

Created by Dominique Jones, Brisbane’s boldest runway for sizes 14 and beyond, was a sold out event celebrating diversity and inclusivity. Dominique was inspired by Fat Runway in Melbourne and wanted to bring a similar vibe to Brisbane.

Celebrating Diversity

Curve the Runway set out to embrace diversity in all its forms - body shape, size, ability, and ethnicity. Her decision to use 21 models? The more models, the more diversity, with the lineup Including our very own Curvy Confidence Club ambassadors, Emma and Charlotte. The event certainly achieved its goal of representation, creating a joyful celebration inclusivity and confidence.

Casting an Inclusive Runway

Dominique spoke to Faternise about the casting process for Curve the Runway.

“During most fashion shows, the runway organisers or casting directors may choose a diverse range of models, but it’s the brands that get the final say on who gets to wear their clothes and represent them. And often the models chosen by the brands all look the same - white, tall, able-bodied and thin.

Curve the Runway is flipping the script. They’re choosing the models for the brands, they have the final say. By doing so, diversity can truly be prioritised in the casting process - authentic representation can finally be at the forefront.”

Supporting & Empowering Women

Not only was the event fashion focused and body positive, but it also raised vital funds for Women’s Legal Services Queensland.

Profits from ticket sales were donated to WLSQ which provides free legal and social work help to Queensland women and children impacted by domestic and family violence. Over the last year, WLSQ provided 45000 services and helped over 14000 women. The recently extended Statewide Helpline answers an average of 90 calls for help per day. Unfortunately, 1 in 3 go unanswered to increasing demand for services.

This year, WLSQ proudly marks its 40th anniversary – a momentous occasion that symbolises four decades of unwavering dedication for promoting justice and equality for women in Queensland. Thank you for supporting WLSQ, all awareness and funds will make a difference. To find out more about WLSQ and how to seek help please visit www.wlsq.org.au.
